Outdoor climbing routes don't maintain themselves. Behind the perfectly bolted lines we love are local rebolting groups—mostly non-profit organizations whose volunteers spend thousands of free hours replacing old, dangerous bolts to keep us safe.
While their labor is free, the hardware is not.
High-quality, corrosion-resistant bolts are expensive.
Think about it: when you climb indoors, you naturally pay a gym entry fee. If we all contributed just a fraction of that gym fee to the locals when climbing outside, it would change everything.
Ultimately, it is your safety and your joy on the line. We all want to push our limits, project at our max, and fight until we fall—confident that the bolt catching us is well-maintained and won't let us hit the ground.
